Early Life
Mkhonza was born in Kwa-Thema, Springs, Gauteng. His parents were Mavis Motsile and Joseph Mkhonza. His father was formerly the head coach of the South Africa women’s national soccer team and led them during the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Siphiwe attended Thulisa Primary School before moving on to Kenneth Masekela Secondary School. During his youth, Mkhonza played for various clubs, including Skheshes Babes, Tip Top FC, Lusitano FC, Munich FC, and Katlehong City.
Career
Mkhonza began his professional football journey with Bloemfontein Celtic in 1999, where he remained until 2001. Remarkably, he assumed the role of captain for his team during his debut season at just 18 years old.
After his time with Bloemfontein Celtic, Mkhonza joined Ria Stars, a Pietersburg-based club newly promoted to the top tier. He showcased his leadership abilities by captaining the team during the 2001-2002 season, making 30 appearances. Following a challenging season with Ria Stars, he sought to demonstrate his worth and moved to Lamontville Golden Arrows in Durban. Here, he captained the team and played a significant role in improving their league standing from 13th to 5th in his first season, missing just one game over two seasons.
His career soared when he joined the prestigious Kaizer Chiefs from 2004 to 2007, winning the league title in the 2004–05 Premier Soccer League campaign. This move also marked his debut for the South Africa national team.
Subsequently, Mkhonza transferred to Maritzburg United, where he captained the team and steered them away from relegation in a single season before moving on.
Staying in KwaZulu-Natal, he enjoyed a successful spell at AmaZulu, contributing to their journey to the Nedbank Cup final and securing a top 8 finish for the club for the first time.
Additionally, he earned seven caps representing the South Africa national team.
