Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, professionally known as Ayra Starr, is a Beninese-Nigerian singer. She is also a fashion model having massive audience on on and off social media.

Early Life

Ayra Starr was born on June 14, 2002 (21 years) in Cotonou, Benin Republic. Thus, she is a citizen of Benin by birth. Originally, she hails from a Yoruba community in Kwara State, located in North-western Nigeria. She is a Christian by religion. Due to the nature of her father’s job, she grew up in three different cities; Cotonou, Lagos and Abuja.

Education

At a young age of 18, Ayra Starr had completed her tertiary education. She graduated from the Les Cours Sonou University, Cotonou with a B. A in International Relations and Political Science.

Career

Ayra Starr loved music from a young age. She revealed that her passion for singing made her pursue her schooling and finish at such a young age, so as to focus fully on music.

She gained recognition after sharing cover songs on Instagram and debuted her first original track in December 2019, catching the eye of record executive Don Jazzy, who subsequently signed her to Mavin Records.Her debut EP in 2021 garnered critical acclaim, blending R&B, neo-soul, and Afropop.

The standout track “Away” topped charts and its video aired on MTV Base. She continued with remixes and collaborations, notably with Crayon and Johnny Drille. In 2021, she performed at Nigerian Idol and released her debut album, “19 & Dangerous,” receiving praise for her distinct Afropop and R&B sound. Starr’s voice, described as “silky” and “soulful,” explores themes of love and empowerment in English, Pidgin, and Yoruba. Critics noted similarities with Tems but praised her unique style.

She revealed that her biggest influence were artists like Shakira and Aṣa. Ayra Starr credits her family, especially her mother and brother, for nurturing her musical talent. Despite comparisons, she’s recognized for her evolving sound and genre-spanning abilities, incorporating influences from her diverse upbringing.

In 2022 and 2023, Ayra Starr featured on tracks by Wizkid and David Guetta, further solidifying her presence in the music industry.

Ayra Starr has garnered numerous nominations and accolades for her contributions to the music industry. In 2021, she received nominations for Best New Artist at the African Entertainment Awards USA, Best Newcomer at the African Muzik Magazine Awards, and Best African Music Act at the Mobo Awards, among others. Her song “Away” was nominated for Most Played R&B Song at the Net Honours.

The following year, in 2022, she won the Breakout Artist of the Year (Female) at the Net Honours and received multiple nominations at The Headies, including Next Rated and Best Vocal Performance (Female). Her album “19 & Dangerous” also received nominations for Album of the Year and Best Afrobeats Album. Ayra Starr won the Headies’ Viewer’s Choice award. Additionally, she was nominated for Best New International Act at the BET Awards in both 2022 and 2023. Pending nominations include the Prize for Music at The Future Awards Africa. In 2024, her song “Rush” received a nomination for Best African Music Performance at the Grammy Awards.
